It took me a few years to figure it out as well. I know the trick is explained somewhere here on the Atlas, since that was where I first encountered it.

As a side note, I love glitching DK64. Last time I played through it, I freed Lanky in Angry Aztec's llama temple without cooling the lava. Thus, the llama sleeps forever, and there is a delightfully warm hot tub for the Kongs to enjoy for all of time. Naturally, however, this is not canon.
