Previous I found out Nintendo's worst secret. I dug out my GBC and played Pokemon Silver for the first time in years.
When I turned it on I discovered my file was deleted (goodbye 251 Pokemon), so I reluctantly started a new game. After about an hour I saved, quit and went to play a halo.
About a week later when I was equally bored, I dug out silver again. I turned it on to find my game was cleared again! Dun, dun, dun... After many attempts, the cartridge would not keep a saved game.
I searched on the net only to find out that these cartridges have a battery in them that runs out after a certain amount of years. Therefore, leaving the cartridge useless as it cannot save a game. Apparently because of the in-game clock in silver, it drains the battery even faster (noticed as my pokemon blue still has my saved game from many, many years ago).
Nintendo has no lost all respect in my eyes. They didn't even put a note in the games booklet to say that this may happen.
On another note, gaming companies complain about the use of illegal roms downloaded from the net. Atleast the rom will last and I won't lose my game data within 3 years!
There's my two cents.
Does anyone know if any other platform's cartridges have similar batteries that will eventually run out?
