Every banana can be collected - and other LIES.

Postby Qyzbud » February 15th, 2008, 12:48 am

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading in the instruction booklets of DKC, DKC2 and DKC3 that every banana is supposedly collectable. Now, anyone who's played Glimmer's Galleon in DKC2 will know that this is simply untrue... but surprisingly it is untrue in both DKC* and DKC3 as well - although far less obviously.

Does anyone else know what bananas I'm talking about? I'm curious to see how many people have noticed.

This topic also begs the question: What other lies have been told through the pages of the trilogy's instruction booklets?

Edit:

Untouchable* bananas of the DKC trilogy:

Reason: Tompa showed that it's possible to collect DKC's obscure banana bunch using a glitch. Well done, sir!

You can grab all bananas in DKC1, however not in DKC2 and I'm unsure about DKC3, haven't played it enough..

Tell me what bananas you think are impossible to get in DKC. My memory might smell.

Was a very long time since I read the instruction booklets. So I have no idea:).

I have no idea what the instruction books say, but what bananas can't you get in Donkey Kong Country? I'm a little confused...

Ah, here we go. :? Heh heh.

This confused me a couple of years ago. Maybe what they mean is that there are no fake bananas that are only images and are programmed to not be collectable.

I just found my copy of the DKC manual, and though it has been chewed upon by rats I'lll try to find some "lies" in it. I also have DKC3, so I'll check that, too.

Yeah, I remember that in DKC2 on Glimmer's Galleon, but not anywhere in DKC. I can't remember.

In DKC3, Lemguin Lunge, there are two random bananas underneath the snow that shouldn't be there. I think they were near the end, you can only see them if you go back to the left.

Correct*, excellent work. 8-)

The unobtainable bunch of bananas in the original DKC is one I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to know about... I'll reveal my findings by this time tomorrow, for those who are still curious.

* ...although there are actually three.

You know how in Donkey Kong Country Exposed there were beta shots with over 100 on the banana counter? Do you think they originally planned for collecting all bananas to be a part of getting 101%?

Hmm, interesting thought. I tend to think not, but I've always thought there should be some mode where bananas, extra life balloons, animal tokens, fully collected sets of K O N G letters and that sort of thing were remembered by the game, and never appear again once collected. I think that would be a little more interesting, a little more challenging and just a little more realistic.

Okay, I've edited some graphical evidence into my first post, so Tompa, the challenge has been issued!

To make matters simpler for you, the gap DK and Diddy are looking down has two bananas floating over it, and the next one (just off-screen) has three. I did use a Pro Action Replay code to lower the camera view so that the banana bunch is visible, but it is certainly there during normal play. I'm guessing it's something they forgot to remove/reposition during the layout development for Mine Cart Carnage.

If you can snag that bunch of deliciousness, I'll be most impressed.

Good luck!

Ah, nice. 8-)

I think DKC's manual is the only one that says that all bananas in the game can be collected... I'm not completely sure, though; I'd have to go check.

Nice find. ;) :P

Are there any more?

Tell if you need a movie as proof instead :).
Also, no I didn't use any cheats. Yes, I was glitching. Mid air jump/roll in the Mine Cart levels is easy.

Yup, Tompa is right. These are collectable and it's not very hard. :)

Too bad I have no idea of getting the bananas att glimmer's galleon. But the bananas in Castle Crush that are inside the wall, are actually collectable. Through severe glitching of course. :) There's also some bananas at Windy Well which isn't normally possible to be found but with glitching they can be found. Wait some time and I'll post some screenshots.
Edit: Oh wait, my memory failed me. There aren't no bananas inside the walls of Castle Crush. My bad.

Image Image Image
This can be done by using a trick that allows one to jump multiply times in air. It as simply as do an upward throw and when the character lands you'll press exactly when she/he lands. It's very hard and requires perfect timing. 3 or 4 jumps is neccessary.
And I think I know why these bananas are there, I think they are originally placed there for being collected from the bonus - even though they are not collected when entering the bonus.

Haha, okay well done, Tompa!

I... can't believe I forgot about that trick.
I discovered it a long time back, but have forgotten how it's done...

So you guys already knew about that banana bunch?

Arne: Does that trick work on the actual console? I found it myself on emulator years back, but haven't got it to work on my SNES. Maybe it's NTSC only... Tompa, you have a PAL cart, right? Does the team-up airjump work for you?

I actually didn't know of it, but I have some memories of me getting it earlier... Were there any more "impossible" bananas?

Too bad I've only got the NTSC version of DKC2, lol =P. I could just try it on emulator though.

As far as I know, that bunch was the one and only...

Awesome that you can still snag it, even though it's a glitch that lets you. Kinda funny... They accidentally put a banana bunch in an 'unreachable' area, then accidentally included a bug which allows you to get it. Those Rare chaps accidentally think of everything!

So, are you gonna remind me how that roll-jump glitch works? :)

Just tried the DKC2 glitch, jumping in the air.

It works with European and American 1.0 but neither version 1.1. And I presume your Australian version isn't 1.0, so that's why it won't work for ya.

Ye ye, go and get some bananas! I presume you might find more "unreachable" bananas in the serie while doing the maps. It's going to be interesting to see.

Also, edit your first post ;).

There's also an impossible (not to mention hidden) banana in Skidda's Row. What's Rareware got with burying bananas in the snow?

Although this isn't classed as a banana. I remember Buzzer Barrage having hidden items in ground patches (the ones that you need to throw Kiddy on to reveal) that are in places that only the purple Squawks can get to...

So that banana is hidden *behind* the snow? How entirely weird.

Yes, I remember wondering about those unstompable ground patches you mentioned. I'll look into this, now that you've jogged my memory... Stuff like that is a perfect candidate for the 'Mysteries' section planned for DKC Atlas.

Heh, fooling around with the layers. I wonder how many of those bananas there are in the game. Maybe you can find a hidden message somewhere?

Sadly, I don't know enough glitches in DKC3 to be able to get them :D. I fail.

Weird, huh? There are probably more obscure, hidden bananas contained within the level terrains as well.

Edit: I didn't know that someone else had already posted the Skidda's Row banana; I discovered that years ago while playing around in an emulator.

It's quite possible. Some of these could be camera (screen) controllers, disguised as simple bananas. They could serve other purposes, I guess.

You never see these while playing the real game... I think that if that's what they are, then the programmers decided that they wanted a banana to represent the camera controllers instead of a glitch sprite.

Just view a state of Mine Cart Carnage using VSNES - there are sprites secluded off-screen:

I wonder... is that really a glitch?

It's very interesting indeed that they would put bananas into the background, it is quite bizarre. Perhaps they serve some unknown purpose like Simion said.

It's more likely to be mistakes when placing bananas on a level editor. Either the bananas were accidentally put there, or the bananas were put there, then the level terrain was moved a little after gametesting and they were forgotten.

I think those are actually the camera sprites, as Simion said. This makes sense, as an object cannot exist without a sprite (at least this is true with all Game Boy development)

A sprite is a 2D image used in a game to represent an object, so basically anything that's not a background. For an object to exist, it has to have an appearance, so it has to have a sprite. Camera objects are meant not to be seen, of course, as what they do is direct the camera to where it is supposed to move. It would make sense to disguise them as bananas.
